Webinar: History of Interpreters and Interpreters in History

Description

The story of our profession is intimately intertwined with that of human Civilization. At every pivotal moment in History, a colleague has been standing right there, making it possible. Notwithstanding, our presence is rarely recorded; the work, once finished, is gone with the wind. This presentation attempts to bring forth our history and its interaction with History on the whole. After a brief call to perspective, we will visit colleagues from the rise of the Egyptian Empire to the fall of the Ottoman. What was most important in the practice of interpreters in such societies? What gave them value within that power structure? Then we will observe just how fast and how profoundly the world, and with it our profession, changed in the 20th century. What happened to our notion of profession and value? Lastly, we land in the 21st century, the digital age and the professional, historical, whiplash we grapple with today, leading us into our last hour: Ethics in the Time of COVID-19, prepared by our esteemed Board of Directors.
